Micah Asks God a Question

To make right with you God, should I bring offerings? Sacrifices? My first born? (Micah 6:7) God responds: “No, not your gifts, your words or even your most prized possession. I want you to do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with me.”

Micah seems to identify himself with God's people here and says, yes, we deserved God's punishment for the wrongs we've done, but, after we've been disciplined, God will bring us back to His light and righteousness; and then it will be the turn of those who laughed and gloated who will experience God's punishment!

The main message of the Book of Micah is that the people and the leaders need to leave behind their lives of sin and corruption in order to receive the grace of God. If they do not do this, their cities will be destroyed.

And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah chapter 7 is a final lament by the prophet. Micah recounts the destruction surrounding him but trusts that God will hear him, bringing light into the darkness.

Micah 6 records that the Lord condemned Israel for their dishonesty and greed, their violence, and their idolatry. Micah 7 sets forth the Lord's promise that in the last days, when Israel repents and returns to the Lord, He will have mercy upon them.

Micah teaches his people that living justly, loving mercy, and following the Lord are more important than sacrifices and offerings. Micah testifies that Jehovah is compassionate and forgives the sins of those who repent.

What was the object of Micah's message? ›

Micah's messages were directed chiefly toward Jerusalem. He prophesied the future destruction of Jerusalem and Samaria, the destruction and then future restoration of the Judean state, and he rebuked the people of Judah for dishonesty and idolatry.

It means that God won't change His mind about what he has called you to do. If God has called you, that calling is still there, whether or not you have obeyed. And if God gave you a gift, that gift is still there! Whatever God has called you to do, He has also gifted you to do it.

Jesus speaks of forgiveness beyond what anyone had ever considered before: seventy times seven! Many commentaries understand this to mean that Jesus was telling Peter that he should forgive his brother a limitless number of times.

Seven was symbolic in ancient near eastern and Israelite culture and literature. It communicated a sense of “fullness” or “completeness” (שבע “seven” is spelled with the same consonants as the word שבע “complete/full”). This makes sense of the pervasive appearance of “seven” patterns in the Bible.

A refined meaning of this phrase has been seen to say that those that are quiet or nullified will one day inherit the world. Meek in the Greek literature of the period most often meant gentle or soft.
