What documents are needed for an amended tax return?
See step-by-step instructions on how to e-file a current tax year tax amendment. Previous year amendments can be completed for free, but will need to be mailed in as the IRS does not accept e-filed returns for years that have passed. It does not cost anything to fill in and mail a tax amendment.

As a reminder, amended returns take up to 16 weeks to process. It can take up to three weeks after filing it to show up in our system.
There is no penalty for simply filing an amended return. But if your mistake caused you to underpay tax, you will owe that additional tax.
You can electronically file up to three amended returns per tax year. If you file a third amended return that is accepted, all subsequent attempts will be rejected.
To amend a return, file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You can use tax software to electronically file your 1040-X online. Submit all the same forms and schedules as you did when you filed your original Form 1040 even if you don't have adjustments on them.
Note: filing an amended return does not affect the selection process of the original return. However, amended returns also go through a screening process and the amended return may be selected for audit. Additionally, a refund is not necessarily a trigger for an audit.
Are you concerned that if you file an amended return that it will trigger an IRS audit? If so—don't be. Amending a return is not unusual and it doesn't raise any red flags with the IRS. In fact, the IRS doesn't want you to overpay or underpay your taxes because of mistakes you make on the original return you file.
You can easily find out the status of your Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, using the Where's My Amended Return? tool on IRS.gov. It's available in English and Spanish, and tracks the status of your amended return for the current year and up to three prior years.
If you are amending your tax return to claim a refund, the IRS requires that you file your amended return within three years of the day you filed your original return, or within two years of the day you paid outstanding tax, whichever is later.
Can I amend a tax return from 5 years ago after?
The Internal Revenue Service limits the amount of time you have to file a 1040-X to the later of three years from the date you file the original tax return, or two years from the time you pay the tax for that year.
Typically, the IRS can include returns filed within the last three years in an audit. If it finds a "substantial error," it can add additional years but it usually doesn't go back more than the last six years.
To start your amended return, go back into TurboTax, open the return that you already sent in, and on the first page you see, click on the link to amend your return. Before you amend: amend only if you need to make a change on a return you have already filed. Wait until you got your refund or paid your taxes.
Share: When you amend a tax return, it can take up to 16 weeks to process even if you e-file. If you file an amended return, you should still get the refund figured on the original return. Then, if your refund is larger due to the change, you'll get the difference between the original and amended amounts.
If you discover an error in the H&R Block tax preparation software that entitles you to a larger refund (or smaller liability), we will refund the software fees you paid to prepare that return and you may use our software to amend your return at no additional charge.

Plus, an amended return that does not report a net increase in tax does not trigger any extension of the statute of limitations. If your amended return shows you owe more tax than on your original one, you will owe additional interest and probably face penalty fees.
But higher-income earners can face increased scrutiny. The odds rise for those reporting income over $200,000 and, according to research from Syracuse University published in January, millionaires are the most likely to be audited out of any income bracket.
If the IRS does see a significant error, they may conduct an audit, which can happen either by mail or in person, with three possible outcomes: The IRS decides all is well and the return stays the same.
The Internal Revenue Service may allow expense reconstruction, enabling taxpayers to verify taxes with other information. But the commission will not prosecute you for losing receipts. The IRS may disallow deductions for items or services without receipts or only allow a minimum, even after invoking the Cohan rule.
How do I know if my tax return has been flagged?
Taxpayers whose tax returns have been flagged for possible IDT should receive one of the following letters: Letter 5071C, Potential Identity Theft during Original Processing with Online Option – Provides online and phone options and is issued most widely.
If the IRS rejected the amended tax return because of a procedural error (usually with IRS letter 916C), it might be as simple as refiling the amended return, providing proof of an item on your return, or filing an additional form.
If your amended return shows as adjusted, it means that an adjustment has been made to your original return and will result in a tax refund, balance due, or no change to your tax liability, depending on how the correction impacts your tax return.
According to the IRS, amended returns filed electronically or by paper have an estimated processing time of up to 20 weeks. How quickly will the "Where's My Amended Return?" tool show a status update?
You made a calculation error on your return.
If your return has an arithmetic error, there's no need to file an amended return. The IRS will usually correct it and send you a notice letting you know. But — you or your tax professional should confirm that the IRS changes are correct.
