What is weekend trading strategy?
The weekend
Weekend trading gives you access to indices, cryptocurrency and forex markets on a Saturday and Sunday. So, if news breaks and you see an opportunity to trade, you won't have to wait until markets open on Monday to trade. Weekend prices for indices and forex are quoted separately to their weekday counterparts.
Traders aware of the weekend effect can potentially profit by selling short-term options on Friday and buying them back on Monday at a lower price. However, this strategy also comes with risks, such as unexpected market events that could cause a significant change in option prices over the weekend.
While you can't directly sell your stocks on the NYSE or NASDAQ over the weekend, you can submit your sell orders. Like buy orders, these sell orders will not be fulfilled immediately. Instead, they will be in a queue waiting for the markets to reopen on the following Monday.
The Weekend Effect, an observed phenomenon in the stock market, implies that stock returns on Mondays are lower than that of the previous Friday. Stock prices do not necessarily move based on days. Though, historically, the stocks tend to perform better on Fridays than on the upcoming Mondays.
In conclusion, weekend trading can be a lucrative and exciting way to make money with the potential to make profits even during times of low liquidity.
Traders that follow the 10 a.m. rule think a stock's price trajectory is relatively set for the day by the end of that half-hour. For example, if a stock closed at $40 the previous day, opened at $42 the next, and reached $43 by 10 a.m., this would indicate that the stock is likely to remain above $42 by market close.
This is because most of these markets are closed or have limited trading hours during weekends. Here's why: Market Closure: Most major stock exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE), are closed on weekends.
The first, the “weekend drift effect,” is that stock prices tend to decline over weekends but rise during the trading week. Cross (1973) found that stock prices tend to decline over weekends in the three-day interval from Friday's close to Monday's close.
Timing the stock market is difficult, but understanding when to trade stocks can help your portfolio. The best time of day to buy stocks is usually in the morning, shortly after the market opens. Mondays and Fridays tend to be good days to trade stocks, while the middle of the week is less volatile.
Which time frame is best for day trading?
Time frame suitable for novice traders is between 10.15 am and 2:30 pm. But due to the subsiding of the morning stock volatility time frame between 10:00 am to 10:15 am can be ideal to grab any opportunity.
With all these factors taken into consideration, the best time of day to trade is 9:30 to 10:30 am. The stock market opens for trading at 9:15 AM and in the first 15 minutes, the market is still responding to the previous day's news with experienced traders waiting to make their move.
As the market regulator SEBI wants market intermediaries such as exchanges, clearing houses and depository participants to ensure a smooth switch to a business continuity plan at disaster recovery sites in case of an unexpected disaster, the exchanges are now conducting the special trading on Saturday.
The 11 am rule suggests that if a market makes a new intraday high for the day between 11:15 am and 11:30 am EST, then it's said to be very likely that the market will end the day near its high.
With a $10,000 account, a good day might bring in a five percent gain, which is $500. However, day traders also need to consider fixed costs such as commissions charged by brokers. These commissions can eat into profits, and day traders need to earn enough to overcome these fees [2].
Just as how long you have to wait to sell a stock after buying it, there is no legal limit on the number of times you can buy and sell the same stock in one day. Again, though, your broker may impose restrictions based on your account type, available capital, and regulatory rules regarding 'Pattern Day Traders'.
Timeframes
Any temporary volatility won't affect your trading. If you are a day trader, your trades last from several minutes to several hours, this question isn't for you as well. You will consider keeping trades open over a weekend if you are a swing trader who has one trade last for up to several days.
However, some traders and investors believe that markets tend to trend downward on Mondays. This can mean much lower returns on Monday than there were to be had on Friday, making Monday traditionally known as a good day of the week to snaffle up potentially undervalued stocks and indices.
Minimum deposit | What can I trade on the weekend | |
---|---|---|
eToro | $10 | 50+ cryptocurrencies |
Exness | $1 | 28 Cryptocurrencies |
XM | $5 | 30 cryptocurrencies |
MultiBank | $50 | 10+ trading pairs |
A buy signal is given when price exceeds the high of the 15 minute range after an up gap. A sell signal is given when price moves below the low of the 15 minute range after a down gap. It's a simple technique that works like a charm in many cases.
What is No 1 rule of trading?
Rule 1: Always Use a Trading Plan
You need a trading plan because it can assist you with making coherent trading decisions and define the boundaries of your optimal trade. A decent trading plan will assist you with avoiding making passionate decisions without giving it much thought.
In investing, the 80-20 rule generally holds that 20% of the holdings in a portfolio are responsible for 80% of the portfolio's growth. On the flip side, 20% of a portfolio's holdings could be responsible for 80% of its losses.
The markets are already active, but volatility is relatively low. Since there isn't much economic activity on weekends, it's also unlikely that the market will adjust to new conditions. Sunday night is the only time of the trading week, when gaps occur regularly for currency pairs.
Stock markets remain closed every Saturday and Sunday, besides other national holidays. But on rare occasions, bourses may choose to keep the market open on the weekend as was seen during the 2020 Budget when the BSE and NSE were open for trading as February 1 fell on a Saturday.
Trading on Fridays provides an opportunity for high reward but that also comes with a high risk. There are some reasons why you shouldn't trade on Friday: 1) Large gaps when the market opens 2) Higher spreads 3) Bad market conditions.
