Why dividend stocks are the best?
In terms of reducing risk, dividend payments mitigate losses that occur from a decline in stock price. But the risk reduction benefit of dividends goes beyond that basic fact. Studies have historically shown that dividend-paying stocks outperform non-dividend-paying stocks during bear market periods.
The stock dividend has the advantage of rewarding shareholders without reducing the company's cash balance. However, it does increase its liabilities. Stock dividends have a tax advantage for the investor as well. Like any stock shares, stock dividends are not taxed until the investor sells the shares.
Some of the advantages of dividend stocks are that they tend to outperform growth stocks, offer consistent cash flow at regular intervals, and because stocks that offer dividends typically indicate that a company is financially healthy enough to pay shareholders cash, the investment can be less risky.

Income-generating stocks may not have the same appeal as they used to, with safer money market funds often yielding better than 5% right now, but it wouldn't surprise anyone if folks begin bidding up dividend-paying companies as soon as short-term rates start falling.
9 In other words, dividends are not guaranteed and are subject to macroeconomic and company-specific risks. Another downside to dividend-paying stocks is that companies that pay dividends are not usually high-growth leaders.
One downside to investing in stocks for the dividend is an eventual cap on returns. The dividend stock may pay out a sizable rate of return, but even the highest yielding stocks with any sort of stability don't pay out more than ~10% annually in today's low interest rate environment, except in rare circ*mstances.
Portfolio Dividend Yield | Dividend Payments With $100K |
---|---|
1% | $1,000 |
2% | $2,000 |
3% | $3,000 |
4% | $4,000 |
As you pass through your 40s, you can gradually increase your holdings of high-dividend stocks and cut back on the riskier, more volatile growth investments. By the time you hit 50, around half your growth stocks should have been replaced by more stable dividend-payers.
Invest in Dividend Stocks
The payments are considered passive income since you can collect the dividends whether you trade the stock actively or not. To generate $5,000 per month in dividends, you would need a portfolio value of approximately $1 million invested in stocks with an average dividend yield of 5%.
Is Coca-Cola a dividend stock?
Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) is a classic Dividend King stock. It has raised its dividend for the past 62 years consecutively, one of the longest streaks on the market.

Most companies pay their dividends quarterly, so you'll receive them four times a year, though some companies pay monthly. Occasionally, a company will issue a special, one-time dividend payment, though this is relatively rare.
Dividends are typically issued quarterly but can also be disbursed monthly or annually. Distributions are announced in advance and determined by the company's board of directors. Companies pay dividends for a variety of reasons, most often to show their financial stability and to keep or attract investors.
After a stock goes ex-dividend, the share price typically drops by the amount of the dividend paid to reflect the fact that new shareholders are not entitled to that payment. Dividends paid out as stock instead of cash can dilute earnings, which can also have a negative impact on share prices in the short term.
But if you're a growth-oriented investor who isn't looking for immediate income, consider investing in stocks that have a track record of increasing their dividends as cash flows and profits increase.
- Don't chase high dividend yields. "There's a reason—and not always a good one—that a security is offering payouts that are well above its peers or the broader market," Steve says. ...
- Assess the payout ratio. ...
- Check the balance sheet. ...
- Look at dividend growth. ...

Dividend Yield
Apple's annual dividend in 2021 was $0.88 ($0.22 paid quarterly). Based on Apple's stock price as of March 1, 2022 of around $163 per share, the dividend yield is approximately 0.50%.
There is no hard and fast rule for how many dividend stocks to start a portfolio, but a good starting point is to aim for a minimum of 10. This will give you a good mix of different companies and sectors and help to diversify your risk.
Can you live off dividends in retirement?
Living off dividends means your portfolio generates a passive income stream that can cover your expenses indefinitely. No more punching the clock to earn a paycheck or worrying about your portfolio's fluctuating value as long as the dividends keep rolling in.
With dividends, the stock price typically undergoes a single adjustment by the amount of the dividend. The stock price drops by the amount of the dividend on the ex-dividend date. Remember, the ex-dividend date is the day before the record date.
Reinvest Your Payments
The truth is that most investors won't have the money to generate $1,000 per month in dividends; not at first, anyway. Even if you find a market-beating series of investments that average 3% annual yield, you would still need $400,000 in up-front capital to hit your targets.
But even at 9.5%, we're talking about a middle-class income of $4,000 per month on an investment of just a touch over $500K. Below, I'll reveal how to start building a portfolio that could get you an even bigger income stream than this today.
A stock portfolio focused on dividends can generate $1,000 per month or more in perpetual passive income, Mircea Iosif wrote on Medium. “For example, at a 4% dividend yield, you would need a portfolio worth $300,000.
